The Nazis knew that a road was being built across the ice of Lake Ladoga, but they thought the plan was a utopian's dream and did not take it seriously at first. And, indeed, the plan might appear fantastic. Lake Ladoga never freezes over completely. It is frozen hard only in some parts and only for several months of the year. It sometimes appears that the lake is covered with thick ice, but if a strong gale should blow in the night there would be only small pieces of drifting floes left the next day. No systematic hydrological observations had been conducted on the lake before the war-there was no need for them.
