Choosing the right envelope for your business needs is very important because it is the first thing your customer sees. Whether you are sending billing invoices or invitations for a charity dinner, the envelope should match the content it contains. Before ordering, consider what you are putting inside them and the message you want to convey to your customer.
Commercial envelopes are used for basic business correspondence. These are almost always used to send billing statements, checks, invoices, letterhead and/or personal correspondence. The most common type of commercial envelope is a #9 or #10 depending on the size of the paper. These are offered with and without address windows.
Announcement envelopes are more formal than commercial envelopes. They have a square flap for a more modern look. Announcement envelopes are often called "A" size and are typically used to mail greeting cards, holiday cards, small booklets, invitations, photographs and/or promotional pieces.
Baronial envelopes are similar to announcement envelopes, but instead of having a square flap, the flap comes to a sharp point. These are also used for invitations, along with various types of personal announcements, such as wedding and baby announcements.
Booklet envelopes are a good alternative for mailing catalogs, folders and booklets. These are also known as open-side envelopes because the flap is on the long side of the envelopes. If you plan to mail annual reports, brochures, sales materials and/or folders, these can provide more protection and durability than commercial and announcement envelopes.
Catalog envelopes offer a better option when mailing heavier or thicker items, such as catalogs, booklets and magazines. These are also called open-end envelopes because the flap is on the short side of the envelope. These are the most durable envelopes without using a heavier cardstock or box.
Once you decide on the type of envelope you need to use, the other step is to pick a size. You will need an one that is about a quarter to half an inch bigger on each side. If your document measures 3" by 6", the best envelope would be one that measures 3.5" by 6.5". This allows plenty of room for the contents to be inserted and removed easily.
